The Upper East Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is set to launch a significant initiative called the “Her Headline Project,” aimed at empowering female journalists in the region to enhance the quality and impact of their storytelling while fostering equitable professional recognition.

During the 4th Upper East GJA Awards ceremony held at the Blue-Sky Hotel in Bolgatanga on October 10, Chairman Albert Sore expressed his concerns regarding the underrepresentation of women among award recipients. He characterized this disparity as indicative of entrenched systemic gender inequalities within the media sector.

Sore observed that the awards distribution reflected a stark imbalance, with a markedly lower number of female winners compared to their male counterparts. He attributed this to two main factors: the smaller demographic of women within the association and the societal structures that inhibit equitable access to opportunities for professional development.

He highlighted that numerous female journalists face barriers in securing training and participation in field assignments that are critical for producing pioneering stories. To address these challenges, the Her Headline Project will implement focused capacity-building and mentorship programs designed specifically for women journalists in the Upper East Region.

“When campaigning for the position of Regional Chairman, I committed to addressing this gender gap,” Sore stated. “The GJA should exemplify leadership in advancing gender equality within the media landscape.” He emphasized the need for collaborative support from attendees of the awards ceremony to realize the objectives of this project.

Additionally, Sore indicated plans to organize a public forum addressing the pressing issues of indiscipline and insecurity within second-cycle institutions—concerns echoed by many parents in the region. This forum aims to convene various stakeholders to scrutinize student misconduct and its ramifications on the educational landscape.

The theme of the 4th Upper East GJA Awards, “Upholding Public Trust: The Role of the Media in Promoting Accountable Governance in the Upper East Region,” served to celebrate journalistic excellence, honoring 13 exemplary reporters from the region for their contributions.
