GJA AWARDS 2024 UE/R

In a heartfelt and impassioned acceptance speech, Castro Senyalah, a distinguished journalist from the Upper East Region, expressed his profound gratitude upon receiving a prestigious award from the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). The ceremony, which celebrated excellence in journalism, was a significant milestone for Castro, who reflected on the arduous journey that the profession entails, particularly noting the inherent security risks that accompany reporting from the volatile area of Bawku.

Castro passionately addressed the audience, acknowledging the perilous nature of his work. "If we all don’t report the pressing issues from Bawku, then who will bring them to the world's attention?" he challenged, highlighting the routine threats he faces through phone calls, text messages, and social media – a constant reminder of the dangers that loom over journalists in conflict zones. His unwavering commitment to transparency and truth in journalism propels him to navigate these risks, striving to inform both local and international communities about critical situations in his region.

His speech also shed light on the collaborative efforts with military personnel, emphasizing how this partnership has gradually led to recognition from government officials regarding the importance of accurate reporting on Bawku. Castro’s work has not only drawn attention to local issues but has also prompted state actors to take notice and initiate dialogue about necessary interventions.

In a moment of sincere appreciation, Castro thanked God for the strength to persevere, along with heartfelt acknowledgments of support from his family, colleagues, his supervisor, the GJA, and the traditional rulers in his community. Their encouragement has been pivotal in his journey as a journalist.

As he wrapped up his address, Castro made an impassioned plea to his fellow journalists, urging them to cultivate unity and cooperation within the industry. He offered to share vital resources and collaborate, believing that mutual support among journalists will enhance the quality and impact of their work.

The speech culminated in a powerful call for peace in the Upper East Region, with Castro emphasizing that without peace, sustainable development is unattainable. As a seasoned "security journalist," he poignantly remarked that the harrowing experiences he has witnessed are often too sensitive to share openly, driving home the urgency of the need for safety and stability in the region.
