While certificate proof the holder as trained or learned from the issuer and can be helpful, they are not a guarantee of practical skills or competence.

Some individuals prioritize obtaining certifications for resume-building rather than genuine skill development, leading to a disconnect between credentials and actual abilities.

For some months now, original certification has been the “bone of contention” in Ghana after some government employees have been criticised of holding such.

In this debate, Onipayede Osom Teye in an exclusive interview with HARDROCK, has added his voice saying, even though certifications can be valuable, it’s also important to recognize that they are not a substitute for practical skills, experience and performance.

Referring to the numerous fake-certificates allegations in the current government, Onipayede said, looking at the performance of the current administration so far, it will be a mistake for President Mahama to sack any of his appointees even when they are guilty because what Ghanaians need is performance but not certificate.

“Individuals should strive to develop both a strong theoretical foundation through certifications and practical skills through hands-on experience and real-world application,” he expressed.

“When hiring, employers should look for a balance between certification and demonstrable practical skills, importance of credentials is to certify as trained by credible institutions on a particular field to work not just title” he added.

Onipayede advised that since the process of obtaining certificate can be manipulated, which can lead to worse situations while people may have no or little knowledge about the certificate they are holding, it’s better for citizens to question performance and not certificate.
He reaffirmed this on Bluewaves Radio 93.7
With Maurice Duncan on Bluewaves Breakfastshow that even the 1992 constitution of Ghana is not certain on the educational qualification for someone to become president in Ghana, so why are we so much interested in individuals educational background instead of performance? He asked.
